What are some good study abroad programs for high school summer sessions in Japan?
I'm a Junior in high school at the moment, and would really love to spend the summer in Japan, learning the language and culture. I'd like a host family, but wouldn't mind staying in a dorm. Any suggestions?

The summer as in this summer right around the corner? It's more than likely too late to apply now for most programs. LanguBridge's summer program in Tokyo still [barely] is open: http://www.langubridge.org/tksumfee.htm but it's quite costly and does not include airfare (flying to Japan and back is about $1200USD). They also don't have the best reviews (mainly the testing was too difficult and the classrooms too cramped). Although I am almost 100% sure application is closed now because usually it ends March 31st, for next year (anyone can attend of any age) you might consider keeping an eye on the America-Japan Grassroots Summit. You and a group of others go to a city in Japan usually spending a night in a traditional inn, then homestaying for about a week, and then you go on to another city of your choice. Most of the cities they send you to are small and more rural and so the city after that is usually much bigger: like Kyoto or Tokyo or whatever you choose. During your homestay you spend a lot of time being guided around by the people in charge of the program, but on your other trip you're basically free to do as you please and you don't have a homestay family at this point in time either. You don't take any language classes in particular, but you do visit many cultural sites. I went in 2007 so if you want to know more you can ask me.

university of tokyo, kyoto university.... these are the best universities. before going to japan, it might be better if you know basic japanese (writing too). maybe start from your country.

Well, what is 'best'? It entirely depends on your circumstances. How old are you? Are you in university? And what do you want to use your Japanese for? How much time do you have? For speaking/writing/etc. It would help a lot if you could provide more details like that. If you are in university and want to spend some time in Japan over summer, I would recommend this programme: http://www.ritsumei.ac.jp/eng/international_programs/rsjp/index.shtml Especially because it is based in Kyoto, you would have a good chance to get to know Japan better. If you are already out of school/uni, then perhaps it would be a good option to actually find a job in Japan, for example as an English teacher. You could then study Japanese in your free time but would also learn a lot of Japanese through all the contacts you will have in your job/general life.

The MEXT scholarship (文部科å¦çœå¥¨å¦é‡‘) is the holy grail of all Japanese scholarships. It provides for all school and examination fees, and a decent stipend. For others, check out JASSO. Taking the EJU (日本留å¦è©¦é¨“) gives you a shot at getting a scholarship worth 600,000 yen. There are other public and local bodies in Japan offering scholarships as well. If you can't understand Japanese well, feel free to contact me. I'll respond when I am available to. REMOVEMEpeardruidREMOVEME[at] hotmail[dot]com

Are there more flexible exchange programs in Japan for high school students
Are there more flexible exchange programs in Japan for high school students?
I want to study abroad in Japan in the spring of 09, but I have specific dates I have open to go. Are there any programs that are more flexible? I would need to leave mid-January and get back in early June.

I studied abroad with Rotary International, which was actually a year-long prgram, but you can pobably check into if they'll do a semester. Other than being year-long, they were flexible on dates to come and go and let kids go home early if they didn't enjoy it. Now I'm studying with CIEE this year but the people in the US suck and I don't know if they do a high school program.

There is one that I recommend called KCP International. It is an extensive Japanese language and culture learning class that you can take over the summer. The cool part about it is that you can either live in the dorms or with a Japanese family. I have tried it and loved it!! You can give it a try!!! Hope this helps! Ja-na! (See you later)
