I've been wondering for the longest time, but why do kids in Middle School and High School in Japan have to PAY to go to school? A tuition? I was wondering, because in America, I think the taxes pay for that. Like I can go to school without paying to. Why do they have to?

They pay to go to private schools just like your parents would pay to send you to a private school. Private schools offer a better education and usually have established relationships with prestigious universities. In Japan if you don't go to the best university then you have very slim chances of being very successful or marrying someone very successful. So you pay to go to a good middle school so you can go to a good high school so you can go to a good university so you can get a good job. Japan isn't America--it's not the land of opportunity. It's very dog-eat-dog.
