It depends on each school. Colleges have longer days than elementary school.

Really, you never know. They have different schedules. Starting the school year, they'll come home much earlier. Then there are club activities. For reference, my oldest daughter leaves at about 7AM and comes home at about 7PM. That includes her club activity. She's in a private school and has about a 45 minute commute/walk each way. The younger leaves at about 8AM and gets home around 4/5PM, depending on club activities. The younger goes to a cram school 3 days a week, which means getting there at 7PM and staying until after 10PM. Summer vacations have summer homework. This is due to the fact that they change grades in the spring. So they are busy even during their vacations. Plus, the cram schools go into overdrive during that period, so even more work to be done. As has been pointed out, the colleges here are time for many to just goof off. They did their time in elementary, junior and senior high school, plus the cram schools. Not to say they all goof off, there are the doctors, dentists, etc, but for many, just goof off time.

In the first grade Japanese children spend 5.5 hours on average in school per day. The school day lengthens as children progress through elementary school, with fifth-graders spending an average of seven hours in school. The seven-hour school day persists throughout middle and high school.

It really depends on the school and school year. For example, Elementary School students would typically start from 8:00 am and finish between 3 and 4pm. First graders are younger so usually go home straight after lunch. In JHS most kids have club so can be at school from about 7:00 am in the morning and finish at 6:00 pm. We used to have school at JHS on Saturdays but they have stopped this recently.

What's with you people who ask such unspecific questions? Are people supposed to guess what you're really asking? Or are they supposed to write a 5000 word essay that covers all the possibilities? God. Public Elementary school: 8:30-3:30, usually with club activities tagged on til 4:30-6:00. Monday to Friday.

Sometimes it even varies by day. When I was in high school, Mondays and Thursdays ended at 4PM, then I had club activities until 6PM. Wednesday was over at 3PM, but sometimes we had an assembly afterwards, and club activities started at 4PM and lasted until whenever. Tuesdays were weird because classes were over at 3:00, but then we had to do our duties (cleaning the classroom, working in the library, etc.) until 4:00, then club activities. And on Fridays we had regular classes until 4PM, but in my second year of high school we had a special research class after that so school ended at 5:30PM, then club activites started at 6PM. So it can be weird. (o_O)
